Why I Choose to Use Young Living Essential Oils
If you’re wondering what company provides the best essential oils… If you’re confused with the standards, grades, and purity of essential oils… this post is for you! I’ll explain the four grades of essential oils, the importance of pure oils, and why I use Young Living’s essential oils.
Believe it or not, we all typically use a variety of essential oils in our every day life! Essential oils can be found in toothpaste, mouthwash, foods, etc. One thing you must know is that not all oils are created equally! Synthetic oils are used in cosmetics, food, toothpaste, and more. Unfortunately, we unknowingly ingest or apply these synthetic oils, and our bodies process them as toxins.
In the United States, there is no rating system for essential oils. The closest we get is an FDA requirement that in order to label a bottle of essential oil “pure” or “therapeutic grade,” the contents of that bottle must contain at least 5% essential oil!
All oils in the world fall into one of four categories:
- Grade A oils are therapeutic, made from organically grown plants, and distilled at low temperatures.
- Grade B oils are food grade, but may contain synthetics, pesticides, fertilizers, chemical extenders, or carrier oils.
- Grade C oils are perfume oils that often contain adulterating chemicals. They ususally use solvents, for example, hexane (which is banned in many countries), to gain a higher yield of oil per harvest. Solvents can be cancerous, and are in many store-bought oils. They may also be diluted 80-95% with alcohol.
- Grade D oils are called “floral water,” which is aromatic only and is usually a byproduct of Grade A distillation. After all the oil is pulled out, the leftover water is sold to companies which will fill 5% of a bottle with the leftover water, fill the rest of the bottle with carrier oil, and label it “pure.”
In order to receive the full benefits of an essential oil, you want to use Grade A oils. Before purchasing an oil, ask yourself these questions:
+ Does the company grow its own plants?
+ Does the company own its own fields?
+ Does the company control the entire growth, distillation, and distribution process?
Those questions are important because pesticides, pollution, and previously farmed land can all affect the quality of an oil. Other oils companies are able to sell oils more cheaply because they cut corners. They may spray their crop with a pesticide in order to have a larger crop for distilling. Some will use chemical solvents like hexane to extract the oil and pull more out. Still, others may dilute oils with carrier oils or alcohol in order to stretch the distilled oil. This is crazy because many of us turn to essential oils to replace chemicals in our home. So it makes no sense to use an oil full of chemicals to get away from chemicals. I chose Young Living because their oils are Grade A (Therapeutic Grade), and free of pesticides, chemicals, and solvents.
